Eco-design
High-performing websites, with a lighter footprint.
We build platforms that load less, compute less and last longer. Sobriety is not an option added to the quote: it follows from our design, coding and release rules.
Measured footprint
This website is eco-designed.
We apply to our own site what we deliver: server-side rendering, optimised images, minimal JavaScript. The public Website Carbon test measures the weight of the home page and derives an estimate of emissions per visit.
See the Website Carbon reportOur position
Sobriety shows in the code, not in the communication.
We claim no label or score we have not measured. What we can say is what we do on every platform: lighter pages, cached rendering, images served at the right size, JavaScript kept to what is needed, and Core Web Vitals checked at every release. A fast site consumes less, for the user and for the servers.
Our direct impact, we addressed at the source: the agency has been fully remote since 2020. Travel is limited to project meetings, internal events and assignments at our clients'.
Four levers
Where the impact is decided.
Direct emissions
A fully remote agency since 2020: travel, the first lever we could act on, is reduced to project meetings and assignments.
Server-side code
Execution load is kept to a minimum through systematic caching: pages, renders, queries. Content is computed once.
Client-side code
Lightweight technologies that reduce bandwidth and device load: server-side rendering, minimal JavaScript, optimised images.
Hosting
Shared cloud platforms, sized to actual need, in regions whose carbon intensity the host publishes.
In our referentials
Written rules, checked at every release.
These practices do not depend on a developer's goodwill: they are written into our referentials and enforced by our release gates.
No image served without transformation
Every image goes through an image style: dimensions adapted to the screen, modern formats (WebP, AVIF), deferred loading of off-screen visuals. Main visuals use responsive images tied to the theme's breakpoints.
Caching on everywhere, including staging
Page cache, progressive rendering (BigPipe), aggregation and compression of stylesheets and scripts: enabled on test environments as in production, to measure under real conditions. The code we write declares its cacheability; no shortcuts.
"Good" Core Web Vitals on key pages
Main templates reach the "good" thresholds for LCP, INP and CLS on mobile, checked with Lighthouse before every release, then monitored continuously on the platforms we maintain.
JavaScript only where it serves
On our Next.js front ends, pages are rendered server-side or generated ahead of time; the JavaScript sent to the browser is limited to genuinely interactive components. Third-party scripts are inventoried and justified.
Features sized to the need
A search engine is installed only when volume justifies it; development modules are uninstalled before release; what is not used is not deployed.
What it brings
Less impact, more value.
Performance and search rankings
Core Web Vitals are a ranking signal: a lean site is also a better-ranked site, and faster journeys convert better.
Accessible on every device
Light pages work on an old phone and a weak network. Sobriety is a form of inclusion, just like accessibility.
Controlled running costs
Less computing and less bandwidth mean hosting sized more accurately and a platform that ages better.
Frequently asked questions
Eco-design: your questions.
What is website eco-design?
Designing a digital service so that it consumes as few resources as possible over its whole life: less data transferred, less computing on the server and on the device, fewer useless features, a longer lifespan. It starts at scoping (which features, for which uses) and continues in the code and in operations.
Are you aligned with the French RGESN framework?
We do not display conformity with the RGESN (the French general framework for eco-designing digital services), because we have not had it audited. Several of its criteria overlap with our rules (images, caching, page weight, features sized to the need). If your organisation needs it, we can run a conformity process on your platform and document it.
How do you measure a site's impact?
Through observable indicators: page weight and number of requests, Core Web Vitals measured by Lighthouse and by real browsers, share of JavaScript sent, cache hit rate. Per-visit emission estimates, such as Website Carbon's, are models: useful for comparison, not to be taken as exact measurements.
Does an eco-designed site cost more?
No, because we do not sell it as an option. The practices described here are part of our referentials and apply to every project. What may cost is an audit or a documented conformity process, priced during scoping.
Can our existing site become leaner without a redesign?
Often, yes. A performance audit identifies the immediate levers: unoptimised images, misconfigured caching, superfluous third-party scripts, unused modules. These fixes fall within the scope of our Drupal maintenance.
